It’s the start of 2016 and we’ve got a whole 365 days ahead of us and anything could happen but is there anything that’s certain to happen that we can look forward to? OF COURSE! Let’s take a gander…
New and Emerging:
We’ve all read the lists, haven’t we? The annual ‘BBC Sound Of‘ poll, DIY’s Class of 2016, Amazing Radio’s Tips, Spotify’s Spotlight, Apple Music’s New Artists…there’s a lot to take in and, to be fair, there’s a lot of cross-overs in them too.
Everyone seems dead certain that Jack Garratt will be making waves this year. He’s already won the Brits Critics’ Choice Award which, historically speaking, means he’ll have a great year with previous winners including James Bay, Sam Smith, Ellie Goulding, Florence + The Machine and Adele. Garratt’s debut album ‘Phase’ is due for release on March 4th.
Another name that’s heavily featured is Frances. Nominated for the Brits Critics’ Choice Award it’s fair to say that big things are waiting for her, too. She’s in the midst of recording her debut album, striking while the iron’s hot!
Billie Marten is practically a child prodigy, having started making music when she was 9 and being only 17 now. Age has no bearing on talent though and she is hotly tipped by pretty much everyone. She’s said to be preparing another EP release which is sure to have support from Radio 1, Radio 6 Music and Amazing Radio amongst others.
Personally, I can’t wait to hear more from The Japanese House who contributed to a huge chunk of my listening last year and got me really excited about the music she was making. Nurtured by indie label Dirty Hit, I’m confident that Amber Bain will not only be a stand-out for 2016 but for as long as she makes music.
Returning To The Spotlight:
It’s no secret there’s a LOT of people waiting and excited for the return of Frank Ocean, but who knows when we’ll hear something? He’s been more than under the radar for a while now!
There’s some hype around a Haim album but knowing how long ‘Days Are Gone’ took to complete, who knows when we’ll hear any of that…
Perhaps we could be hearing new tracks from Vampire Weekend before the year’s out, too. Frontman Ezra Koenig’s tweet yesterday seemed to hint at the prospect. Since ‘Modern Vampires of The City’ was one of the best albums of 2013, that’s definitely something to keep an ear out for.
One album we can be sure is on its way is The 1975‘s second ‘I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It’. There’s a mammoth 17 tracks on it, so amongst those there must be something for everyone! I won’t lie, I’m not the biggest 1975 fan but these newest tracks have really caught my attention. From the Ghostbusters style synths on Love Me, and the guitars dripping with chorus on Ugh!, I can’t get enough and a live version of Somebody Else pretty much sealed the deal. I can’t wait to hear it!
If you’ve got anything you think we should be keeping an ear out for, please comment or tweet me! I’d love to hear from you!
